Mix Service

Hello, great that we’ll be working together, I love making sonic dreams come true!

On this page you will find some technical details to prepare our session.

Session Timeline

Mixing project timeline - from intake to feedback to mastering

Intake

We’ll go over all the details via email, video call, or whatever works best for you. If you have specific sonic dreams, I’d love to hear them; tell me what you envisioned when you created the music. You’re welcome to share a playlist with your references. I like instructions, but I don’t need them, so feel free to guide me as much or as little as you like.

I could help with the production of the tracks. If I think I can contribute something essential I will share my thoughts. And you can decide if we’ll make them audible. I can re-amp your synths, use analog filters, distortion, add bass, guitar, synths, or provide rhythm/groove programming; anything needed to create maximum impact.

Please read the file guidelines before sending your files to me.

Mixing

If you are able come to the studio, you are welcome to join me. Generally I work solo on the mixes and send you the updates. Or we can work remote; there are many tools available for you to see my screen and hear the mix master bus in realtime. All while having a video call with you, anywhere in the world with a good internet connection! Amazing actually, and works really good.

I put the mixes on StackTune so you can hear the results in high resolution. It’s a great online tool to compare different versions of the mix and you can comment on the time line (or a time region) for clear communication. Take a look at the website to get an overview of the features. I can send you mix files if you want, but please be aware that old mixes on hard discs might cause harmful mistakes and this online solution tries to prevent that. Plus it provides a convenient way to correctly compare mixes for everybody involved, no installs, works on all devices, just hit play.

It’s only done when you say it’s done. I will mix and tweak till everybody is happy. It is my absolute joy to help you get the best results from your recordings and I don’t mind to keep tweaking to make sure all details are taken care of. If feedback rounds take much more time than normal I will notify you in advance and we’ll think of a solution that works for both of us.

Dolby Atmos certified music studio

My RedHouse studio is a Dolby Atmos Calibrated & Recommended mix studio to deliver your music in this new immersive format. It's a great way to express your music on a bigger canvas and will add multiple dimensions to the listening experience. Having an Atmos mix ensures you’re included wherever your listeners experience music.
I will tell you everything about it when you visit my Atmos Listening Session. And I created a page where I answered the most common questions about the Atmos mix process, read more here.
Prices depend on the project, please contact me for more details.

Mastering

Normally I don’t master the tracks that I mixed. But there are many exceptions to that rule. We will discuss the best solution for your music. I can do the mastering or we send the mix to a mastering studio of your choice. I can connect you to mastering engineers which I think are really good.
I like to be involved in the mastering of the mixes to make sure we reach an optimum end result.

Boring stuff

Invoicing

€ 500 (ex BTW/VAT) per day per track is the norm. This does not apply to solo instruments or small ensembles and may vary based on the budget and complexity of the music. I am willing to talk about other options per project.
I will send you a 50% invoice before I start and the other 50% when everybody is happy.

Session Media

The mixed and/or mastered audio files will be delivered in any format you want. The session files (Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Ableton, Audition etc.) used to create the mix and/or master will not be included unless we agreed otherwise.
Mixed stems for other purposes (e.g. remix) can be created no later than 90 days after session completion. For prices please contact me.

File Preparation Guidelines

Some technical details about the files you will send me so I can make a better mix:

Audio files:

  • Audio Formats: 24 bits, 44.1 or 48 kHz is perfect, but anything will do.
  • All files should start from the exact same point in time, at the beginning of the song before any sound starts.
  • Use clear and consistent names that describe the source, instrument, mic position, or what they sound like. Not “Audio 1”, “Input 6”, “SYNTH-4-87_R_25- 24b”, etc. please.
  • You can help me with more meaningful names as: “main piano”, or “snare double”, “soft pad” to hunch me the way they should be treated.
  • Use the song title as the folder name, no need to include it in each file name.
  • Provide all sound sources separately, no sub-mixes unless specified.
  • If there are left/right pairs (mics, synths etc) export as stereo files (hard-panned). Avoid making a stereo file for a mono source.
  • Bounce all the tracks with all faders (including master) set to 0 dB without (volume or other) automation and without FX/processing. If certain automation or processing is important, add a file that includes it and add a short note.
  • Make sure files are free of editing clicks, pops and unwanted noises. I don’t plan time for cleanup normally. Let me know in advance if you want me to help with repair, click removal, noise reduction etc.
  • If you have a rough mix you like, please include it (any format is fine) and tell me what you like about it.

Other files:

  • Create a text file with the BPM (if recorded with a click) and other things I need to know that guided the performances.
  • Add all lyrics (pdf/text/etc) if your recording includes any singing and/or spoken word.
  • If you have any pictures of the recording setup (placement of microphones) please add those.

You can upload all your files here.

The End

If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me an email for more details.

Thank you for reading all the way!
